If you’ve ever scrolled through wedding photos and thought “how does the light look that good?” — there’s a strong chance those were golden hour shots. Golden hour wedding portraits use that short window of warm, soft light right before sunset, and the results speak for themselves every single time.
Golden hour happens roughly 60 minutes before the sun goes down. During this window, the light turns warm and directional. Shadows soften across your face. Skin looks incredible. Everything gets a natural glow that no editing filter can replicate. It’s the single best lighting condition for portraits, and we plan for it at every wedding we shoot. Once you see the difference, you’ll understand why we talk about it so much.
To take full advantage of golden hour wedding portraits, we need to build your timeline around sunset. That means knowing what time the sun goes down on your wedding date and working backward. We’ll carve out 15–20 minutes for just the two of you during that window. Sometimes that means stepping away from cocktail hour briefly. However, we promise it’s worth every second you spend with us.
Location matters during golden hour. We look for open spaces with an unobstructed view of the sky — fields, rooftops, lakesides, or long driveways all work well. Additionally, we avoid heavily wooded areas during this time because the trees block the low-angle light. Your venue’s landscape plays a big role, and we’ll scout the best spots ahead of time so we don’t waste a single minute.
During these 15–20 minutes, we keep things relaxed and natural. We’ll guide you into a few poses, then give you prompts to interact with each other. Walk together. Laugh at something. Tell each other a joke. The goal is genuine connection, not stiff posing. Also, don’t worry about knowing your “good side” — that’s our job and we’ve got you covered.
Cloudy skies still produce beautiful, even light for portraits. You won’t get the same golden warmth, but overcast conditions eliminate harsh shadows and create a soft, flattering look. So even if the sky doesn’t cooperate perfectly, we’ll still pull you aside for sunset-time portraits. Furthermore, some of our most dramatic images come from overcast days with moody cloud textures in the background.
Golden hour wedding portraits consistently end up as the favorites in every gallery we deliver. Trust us on this one — make time for it and you won’t regret it.
