Why Wedding Day Timeline Tips Matter

Here’s the thing. When the schedule is too tight, everyone feels it. You feel rushed. Your bridal party feels stressed. And we’re scrambling to grab shots between events. On the other hand, when we build in buffer time, that’s when the good stuff happens. Those relaxed, genuine moments between you and your people? They come from not being in a hurry. Good timeline planning is really about giving yourself permission to slow down and enjoy things.

Build in Buffer Time

We always recommend adding 15–20 minutes of cushion between major events. For instance, if your ceremony ends at 4:00, don’t schedule portraits to start at 4:05. Give everyone time to breathe, grab a drink, and settle in. Also, consider travel time if you’re moving between locations. Even a short drive can eat into your photo window if you’re not accounting for it.

Plan Around the Light

Lighting can make or break your photos. So naturally, we love scheduling portraits during golden hour — that window about an hour before sunset when everything looks warm and soft. If your ceremony is in the afternoon, we’ll work with you to carve out 20–30 minutes for couple portraits during that sweet spot. Trust us, it’s worth stepping away from cocktail hour for a few minutes.

Give Getting Ready Enough Time

This is one of the most overlooked parts of the day. Getting ready photos are some of our favorites because they’re full of emotion and anticipation. However, if hair and makeup runs behind, it creates a domino effect on the entire schedule. We suggest padding an extra 30 minutes into your getting-ready window, just in case.

Don’t Forget Family Formals

Before the reception kicks off, you’ll want time for family group photos. In addition, having a list ready to go makes this process so much faster. We’ll work with you to create that list ahead of time so we’re not guessing who needs to be in which photo. This alone can save you 15–20 minutes on the day.
